WHAT IS OROFACIAL MYOLOGY?
Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD),
are atypical patterns of the face, mouth, lips, or jaw.
OMDs affect, both directly and/or indirectly, breastfeeding, facial skeletal growth and
development, chewing, swallowing, speech, breathing patterns, sleep breathing disorders,
temporomandibular joint movement, oral hygiene, long-term stability of orthodontic treatment, facial
aesthetics, and more. Insufficient obstructed airway and obstructed nasal breathing play a critical
role in the development of these disorders. OMD's can an do develop across the lifespan.
